about

"Map of Rain Hitting Water" was commissioned by the performer, Mark Lowry of newEar Contemporary Music Ensemble and inspired by a poem by Wayne Miller.

In Wayne's poem "Clarence Playing," I am intrigued by the relationship between how words visually appear on the page vs. how they sound. This relationship frequently creates a dichotomy, which triggers a multiplicity of meaning. I assimilate the texture to polyphony.

"Map of Rain Hitting Water," explores the simultaneity of two seemingly contradictory aspects of poetry; the rhythm of the actual words creates a proportional structure different from how the phrase appears on the page. This ratio relates to the structure (both on large and small scales) in "Map." While there are several images I derived from the poem, and served as a structural inspiration, the music is not meant to “interpret” or “paint” the poem. Most of my decisions are intuitive, emphasizing sound over structure.
